Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey – Polymash Inc. today is pleased to announce their special back to school pricing for its iPad app, The Crankamacallit, an original interactive children’s story. The app will be free all day Thursday, August 30th, and reduced by 60% throughout Labor Day Weekend.

On the surface, The Crankamacallit is a children’s story about building a fantastic imaginary vehicle. The story is visually rich, filled with stunning animation. As well, it’s an auditory delight, with surprising sounds, playful, rhythmic language and rhyme. Children (and their parents!) are drawn into a curious, three-dimensional world of an inventor’s workshop. 4-8 year old kids are mesmerized by the step-by-step process of The Crankamacallit’s creation. They are active participants in the adventure as they make unexpected discoveries, explore 360-degree panoramas, play with the hidden drawing tool and the official seal, and fill up balloons, making them float to the top of the airplane hanger, and lots more.

This app takes some risks that sets it apart from most children’s stories. The developer took a page out of game design by utilizing a first person perspective in interactivity, animation and illustration. Interactive elements are intentionally not highlighted nor easy to find. User testing feedback revealed kids “get it” and teach their parents the functionality, not the other way around. Another risk was to use the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite platform to create a children’s book, and to extend its core functions with HTML5 and JavaScript coding. The developers have since published multiple titles using Adobe Digital Publishing and, with this app, show that the platform can be used for much more than just the digital magazines for which it was originally created.

Every page is an invitation to discover objects that move, trigger animation or produce fun sounds, adding surprise and delight to the reading experience. This app, as an emerging digital storytelling art-form, aspires to deliver on Apple’s vision on the iPad: “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. That it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.” (Steve Jobs at the launch of iPad 2.)

One user’s review captures it well:” It’s not a book of puzzles. It’s a book that tells a story (obviously), and invites you to explore the world created so cleverly by the graphic artist. Don’t leave a single stone unturned when you go through the book, or, give it to your 3 year old and sit back and be amazed.”

Part poem, part prose, this rhythmic 3D fantasy was written by Mimi Cross, animated by Juergen Berkessel and narrated by acclaimed singer songwriter Robert Burke Warren, aka “Uncle Rock”. Listeners will laugh out loud at the nuances of Warren’s performance. Using playful, rhythmic language and rhyme.
