The book begins with a movie full of beautiful images and relaxing classical music that interweave with the content of the novel. Anna and Lucia are two girls of Italian descent born in Borneo, where they received a sound education, rich cultural experience and close relationship with their parents. When they discover an affair between their parents, disgusted they decide to leave and move to Italy.
In a very closed society, they find it very difficult to make friends. They find a job, but are humiliated daily. Each of them finally finds a partner, but only with the help of a marriage agency. Intertwined with the book are descriptive, specific historical references and images of the magnificent monuments of Sicily, Rome, Florence and Venice. They are abandoned by their partners. To recover, they reopen their old schoolbooks and resume studying philosophy, physics, chemistry and mathematics. When one of the girls discovers wicked behavior of her former partner, Anna and Lucia decide to go back in Borneo, forgive their parents, and finally find happiness.
