London, United Kingdom – Racing Blind is a multiplayer driving game you play with your eyes closed. It was devised by Sam Butterfield and his son Asa whilst on the set of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas (in which Asa stars). They played the game with paper and pens to while away the time on set between scenes. Along with Asa’s brother Morgan, Racing Blind has become a bit of a family favourite ever since. At the end of 2012 they decided to share their idea with the world and make a version for the iPad.
They’ve kept the iPad game as near to the original idea as possible, and of course kept it’s USP – it’s the only game in the world that you play with your eyes closed. Oh wait a minute, Pin The Tail On The Donkey is the other one. You can play the game on your own, but the game really come into it’s own when in multiplayer mode. With up to 9 drivers it is a perfect game for families and friends to play together. Watching each other swerve blindly around a choice of 36 tracks, get lost, and crash lots is hilarious. It’s a dead easy game to get to grips with. Anyone over about 6 years old has just as much chance of winning as Dad.
If you can’t trust your opponents to keep their eyes closed whilst driving, you can play with a blindfold. Alternatively you can switch the game to ‘Black-out’ mode in which you play with your eyes open, but the iPad screen goes black, so you’re still effectively ‘racing blind’.
Creating a computer game that requires you to close your eyes has caught most people unfamiliar with the game a little unawares. The game developers were like ‘Um, come again?’ But once the game was in development and in a shape that was playable they were ‘Ohhh right! Cool’ It’s counterintuitive to do without a computer game’s main attribute – it’s screen. But it really works. You’ll just have to try it for yourself. The funny thing is that the game flips the bird at fancy hi resolution screens. Who needs them? Well Racing Blind doesn’t at least.
Sam Butterfield is an advertising creative at Publicis London, and has relished being both the creative and the client. No arguments or compromises there! He’s designed the graphics and written the rather groovy music. Asa Butterfield first major role was playing the lead role in the movie The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. Since then he’s played the lead in Scorceses ‘Hugo’ and will again be on our screens in November playing Ender Wiggin in the much anticipated ‘Enders Game’.
