Chat TimeAre you a frequent user of your long-distance minutes on your mobile device? Perhaps you have family and relatives overseas. If that’s the case, Chat Time will help you discover a whole new way to save money on international calls.

Chat Time is not a voice over IP (VoIP) application. Surprisingly. In fact, from my understanding it uses a similar method to calling cards whereby the call is first made to a proxy / host where it is then forwarded to the destination (could be wrong on the details). As a result, it doesn’t use up your data. On the flip side, you do have to be careful with minutes used by your service provider as it will still count as a regular phone call. Essentially, the final result is that you use your local minutes to make Chat Time calls to international phone numbers. Is this really better than VoIP solutions like Skype? The answer, as always, isn’t so clear-cut and it really depends on your current phone plan, frequency of phone calls, and etc. The great thing about Chat Time, however, is that you don’t have to spend money right away and you’re given $1 dollar complete free upon downloading of the application. While one dollar may seem like miniscule amount, it really goes to show how much you really get for your money’s worth. One dollar will let you talk internationally for roughly 30 minutes! Inside Chat Time you’ll find various plans ranging from as little as $5 to as much as $35 depending on your needs and countries.

Overall, I found Chat Time to be really easy to set-up and get started with. It took less than two minutes to download, install, create an account and start using the application. Cellular calls have their advantages and disadvantages compared to VoIP applications, but its nice to see that there are at least alternatives on the market. if you’re an iPhone user, you’ll also be glad to know that Chat Time is also available on iOS and is just as easy to use.
