Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Mediaspree LLC today is proud to announce the release of CoinScout version 1.0 for iOS, a simple tool to help locate local shops and restaurants that accept bitcoin as payment. Bitcoin, a peer to peer digital currency, has gained attention recently as a legitimate form of payment for use on the internet and beyond.
CoinScout uses a virtual compass interface that fixates on the nearest bitcoin friendly venue to guide users as they explore the neighborhood around them. A quick spin of the compass will reveal other merchants who accept bitcoin nearby.
Users can explore further using advanced mapping as well as the unique ‘bit vision’ mode which uses the devices camera and location for an augmented reality experience. Once a venue has been selected, CoinScout offers directions, contact information and easy access to merchant websites.
CoinScout seeks to to focus on traditional “Brick and Mortar” venues that accept bitcoin as opposed to those with only an online presence. “As more local places being to adopt bitcoin, we’re excited to see the app evolve in ways that encourage the bitcoin community.” said lead developer, Eric English. “We want to help stimulate the bitcoin economy by offering bitcoin enthusiasts an easy way to find places to spend it.”
CoinScout utilizes data derived from Open Street Map. As adoption of bitcoin continues to grow, CoinScout will be automatically updated with new venues. Any merchant that accepts bitcoin can easily add itself to the app by editing its accepted payment types in their Open Street Map entry. Data in CoinsScout is made available under ODbL. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency introduced as open source software in 2009 by pseudonymous developer Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a cryptocurrency, so-called because it uses cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money.
Users send payments by broadcasting digitally signed messages to the network. Participants known as miners verify and timestamp transactions into a shared public database called the block chain, for which they are rewarded with transaction fees and newly minted bitcoins. Bitcoins can be obtained by mining or in exchange for products, services, or other currencies.
