Belgrade, Serbia – Pixelnetica today is proud to announce SharpScan, a free iOS app enabling iPhone and iPad users to use their mobile devices as handheld document scanners has been updated. The new release adds full iPad support with new scalable UI, and becomes an iOS Universal Application. Adding new image processing functionality, this last version of mobile scanning app improves noise reduction to facilitate higher digital noise levels of flash-less iPad hardware.

SharpScan Turns Apple iPad into a Mobile Document Scanner

The latest release of Pixelnetica’s free mobile scanning app turns any iPhone, iPod touch or iPad into a fully featured mobile scanner. The latest release features a scalable UI and becomes a Universal Application, ensuring smooth functionality and sharp look even on the latest high-resolution displays. The new user interface is optimized for the larger screen, enabling easier and more straightforward workflow compared to the iPhone version. Most functions are now accessible via a single click thanks to the larger, more spacious iPad display.

The addition of automated noise reduction is aimed at iPad users having no built-in flash available. The newly added noise reduction algorithms suppress camera noise producing clean, sharp images one expects from a high-end scanner.

“SharpScan takes advantage of iPad’s more powerful hardware and bigger screen when scanning documents”, says Dmitry Harchenko, Pixelnetica CEO. “SharpScan makes use of the extra CPU power by enabling additional processing without slowing down the scanning, automatically adapting to specific camera models installed in various Apple devices and applying a perfect profile.”

About SharpScan

Produce true black-and-white, flatbed-quality PDF images out of ordinary snapshots in full auto mode! Replacing a flatbed scanner with a handheld mobile device has been a dream for generations of mobile users. While using a camera built into an iPhone or iPod may produce an OK snapshot in good lighting conditions, snapping a picture of a document with that iPhone does not produce a document quality image. The small sensor packed with megapixels and combined with tiny optics produces images full of distortions, digital noise and optical aberrations. Handholding the device while snapping a flat sheet of paper introduces unwanted shadows and additional geometric distortions requiring complex algorithms to correct tilt, arbitrary rotation and 3D distortions, requiring users to spend time in dedicated editing software.

SharpScan is designed to take care of all these issues in full auto mode, producing high-quality documents that look just as if they were scanned with a conventional scanner. Flatbed-quality documents can now be produced on the go quickly with any iPhone or iPad.

Automated Image Corrections

SharpScan automatically correct images snapped with the phone’s built-in camera by applying a host of digital corrections. The unique Smart Crop feature produces straight, rectangular images out of angled and distorted document snapshots by automatically detecting image boundaries, cropping and aligning the image and correcting geometric and perspective distortion. Smart Crop enables fast, accurate acquisition of document images.

Non-Destructive Editing

Manual adjustments are available to those users who need more control over their images. Smart Crop offers a wide range of manually adjustable settings, allowing users to control each and every setting. Non-destructive image editing allows users editing the image on the screen without overwriting the original.

Flatbed Quality PDF Documents

SharpScan it is the only mobile scanning app on the market creating compact black-and-white PDF images in flatbed scanner quality – as opposed to JPEG-compressed images produced by competition.

JPEG has never meant to be used on black-and-white text, charts and drawings, introducing annoying blocking and false color artefacts. Yet, most commercially available scanning apps will either use JPEG to compress images, or produce humungous TIFF files with lossless compression.

Pro Grade Mobile Scanning Tool

Unlike those apps, SharpScan handles text and artwork in a proper way. Scanned documents are converted into true black-and-white (as opposed to monochrome images with multiple shades of grey) via a smart threshold algorithm. The tool then applies lossless image compression, resulting in PDF files that are up to 20 times smaller than comparable resolution JPEGs. The small size is essential when considering the limited mobile bandwidth and traffic cost.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch and iPad
* Requires iOS 7.0 or later
* This app is optimized for iPhone 5
