Fort Bragg, North Carolina – Tactical NAV, a battle-tested app created for soldiers by soldiers, is now available for iOS and Android users worldwide. The app, which is available on Google Play and the iTunes App Store, assists troops in mapping, plotting, sharing and photographing waypoints with other users on the battlefield. The app has even been used to call for artillery and mortar strikes against insurgent forces during combat.

“We are extremely proud to have Tactical NAV available for both iOS and Android – its been a long time coming and we’ve worked extremely hard on this project,” said Jonathan J. Springer, app creator and active-duty U.S. Army captain.

Springer, who is currently stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., created the app during a combat deployment with the 101st Airborne to the Pech Valley in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, in 2011. It gained worldwide attention after a free-lance journalist witnessed him using Tactical NAV to call for artillery fire during an enemy attack on base. The app was successfully used to neutralize the insurgent threat.

“Basically, you’re getting some of the same tools in Tactical NAV that the U.S. military uses in some very expensive pieces of equipment. But instead of a $2,000 GPS device, this combat multiplier comes in the form of an app that costs $6.99 for iPhone or Android,” said Springer.

Tactical NAV’s lead developer, Alan Corbett, has worked side-by-side with Springer for the last two years and is elated the app is available for download.

“I’m extremely happy the app is finally out on Google Play and the App Store and I’m also very excited to know soldiers who love Android will be able to use this app in the field. I think users will really be blown away by the cross-platform support between Android and iOS versions of the app,” said Corbett, who has been coding for more than 20 years.
