If you’ve been hunting for the best remote desktop application you may have come to a slight dilemma. All apps on the App Store for remote desktop access simply have too many flaws, such as inability to connect over 3G or Mac incompatibility, or some other very annoying pitfall. However, you have stumbled upon an app called LogMeIn, which seems to be wonderful at everything you want, and even some things you didn’t know could use. At this point you’re probably wondering whether you should dish out the $30 that it costs, and whether it will be worth the cost. Let’s find out.
LogMeIn is a great app for anyone that needs to be in a few places at the same time. Particularly when those places are in front of a computer thats anywhere BUT in front of you. First, in order for LogMeIn to work, you must download and install their software which is available free of charge from their website. Once happily installed on your Mac or PC, you can begin to access your desktops remotely. The great thing about LogMeIn is that it allows remote access to your desktops not only from a local WiFi network like most remote desktop clients on the App Store, but via 3G and non-local WiFi connections as well. Although 3G connection can be deathly slow at times and every click takes nearly half a minute to process, it is an available option.
Once you are logged in to the LogMeIn account on your iPad or iPhone, all available desktops that are ready for access appear as a list. Inactive desktops will show up grey and inaccessible. The only down side at this point in time is that LogMeIn does not support waking up sleeping computers, and as a result you cannot access desktops remotely unless they have been left running. Also, another thing to keep in mind is that LogMeIn does not support any audio transfer so sound can only be heard at the source. We can hope, however, that these features can be implemented in an upcoming update.
With that aside, if you have a good connection, the interface and usability is fantastic. The screen functions like a giant track pad where you tap to click and slide your finger about to move the cursor. Pinching with two fingers will zoom in and out of the screen.
It works exactly as you would expect for thirty dollars, and does everything a remote desktop client should and some. So with that in mind, yes, it is a little pricy at $30, but if you are a regular remote desktop user or looking into becoming one, LogMeIn Ignition is the best at what it does and will most definitely justify your spendings.
